Say WHAT?!

This week for Say WHAT?! Wednesday, I’m going to reveal why buying this gift bag (found at a stationary supply store in South Korea) could link you to a terrorist organization. Click on the photo for the reveal.

I don’t know about you, but this made me Say WHAT?!

(Disclaimer: Nothing in this post will link you to a terrorist organization. It’s just a joke based on the weird English found on this bag.)

Motivation Monday

Happy Monday, everyone! Today is our last day in Thailand. Hope you all have a great week! Again, don’t forget to check back to see what makes me Say WHAT?! this Wednesday.

Phuket, you do not disappoint!

Holy heck! I do not know what to say. I spent my first few days on a small island about 40 minutes away by speedboat and today I’m meeting my handsome Australian back on the mainland at The Shore at Katathani Beach Villas on Kata Noi Beach in Phuket, Thailand. Wow, that’s a mouthful!

I am in love with this place. I’ve already seen an elephant and check out our room view. I’m absolutely speechless.

Say WHAT?!

It’s Say WHAT?! Wednesday again! That means I get to share with you more bad English or weird things that I’ve seen during my time in South Korea.

Just in case you missed last week, CLICK HERE to check out the crazy shirt I caught one of my 6th graders wearing to school!

“BABY IN CAR” type signs have been popular in many places in the world at one time or another and they are all the rage in Korea at the moment. It was no surprise to me that the large stationary chain in town was selling them, but nothing could have prepared me for this…

Baby [with axe] in car!

To me, it screams, “Don’t drive like a jerk because I have a baby with an axe inside the car and there’s no telling what he might do!” Personally, I find babies with axes terrifying. And this one in particular kind of looks like a badass.

Have a great week! I’m headed off to Thailand today, but don’t forget to check back for Say WHAT?! Wednesday!

Family Photos

When I was back in Dallas I found a Groupon for a 4 hour photography class by Beaux Arts Photography for only $50. I decided to give it a try.

The class was broken up into 4- 1 hour segments.

  1. The Art of Photography – covered basics of photography as an art form and photo composition
  2. Camera & Lighting Essentials – Aperture/Shutter Speed/ISO, JPG vs. RAW
  3. Practice – We were given assignments and were sent out to take photos
  4. Adobe Lightroom 101 – How to backup, store, organize and edit your photos

The class is designed for true beginners. The instructor, Sam, explaned things in very simple ways and made things that are a bit complex a lot easier to understand. He was very patient and was willing to answer every question. I thought he was a great teacher.

The most valuable part of the class, for me, was the last hour on Lightroom 4. This is a program that I was already using, but not well. Sam taught me several new tricks that I wasn’t aware of that have really improved my photo editing skills.

I decided to take what I learned and put it into practice by taking some family photos for my brother and his family. This was my very first portrait photo shoot and I am really happy with the results!

Say WHAT?! Wednesday

English is so popular here that it almost doesn’t matter what something says, Koreans will buy it just for the writing. This week’s Say WHAT?! is one of the best examples I can think of to prove my point.

During my first year teaching in Busan, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw one of the most popular 6th grade girls wearing the shirt below.

engrishIf you can’t make out the writing, it says…

I’m
A
Virgin!

Random Acts of Kindness

When I visited home in February, I was so happy to get back and see all of my friends and family that I miss so much while I am living in Korea. I was thrilled when I realized that I would be home for Melissa’s birthday. Melissa is one of my very dear friends. We went to high school together, but we didn’t actually become friends until we bumped into each other at our university one day during our freshman year.

This year, most of my friends are turning 29 and I wanted Melissa to have a memorable beginning to the last year of her 20’s. I wanted us to spend the day performing Random Acts of Kindness (RAOK). My sister-in-law, Mendi, and I planned out a big adventure for the three of us. We only told Melissa to meet us at Mendi’s house so she had no idea what what we were doing.

When Melissa got to the house, she received a warm welcome!

Then we explained what the day had in store. It was a lot to take in, but she was excited!
